The Black Hills
The Black Hills Region covers a large area in the eastern part of South Dakota and has many state parks and natural wonders. Custer State Park is one of the largest parks in South Dakota; wildlife roams freely here, including a large Bison population. Badlands National Park is located here.
Badlands National Park
Located in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park consists of nearly 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest, protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. Sixty-four thousand acres are designated official wilderness, and is the site of the reintroduction of the black-footed ferret, the most endangered land mammal in North America.
Mount Rushmore
Located in South Dakota's Black Hills, Mount Rushmore is the world's greatest mountain carving. This epic sculpture features the faces of four exalted American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The 60-foot high faces, 500 feet up, look out over a setting of pine, spruce, birch, and aspen in the clear western air.
